Moral Compass
Right and Wrong in the Church of Reality
|
The moral compass is a set of guidelines as to what is right and wrong. It is not an absolute rule. There are always situations where just about anything is justified, but those are the exceptions. The Moral Compass can be compared to the 10 Commandment from Judaism, where the Sacred Principles can be compared to the one principle in the Christian Bible of "do unto others as you would have others do unto you." It is different from the Sacred Principles in that it is more about policies and positions on specific issues and behavior rather than the reasons behind those policies.
This is called the Moral Compass because it is intended to point you in a direction by citing examples of what is right and wrong so that in any situation you can figure our the right thing to do. It is also a statement to the world of what we find morally reprehensible, challenging other religions and the non-religious to consider where we stand on right and wrong. This represent in part the moral identity of the Church of Reality.

The following is a list of things the Church of Reality considers to be wrong. Order doesn't mean anything. The list doesn't indicate the degree that it's wrong. Nor does it imply that they are equally wrong or always wrong. It shows the Theist world that we Atheists have a concept of right and wrong as well.
- Murder
- Rape
- Stealing
- Genocide
- Human and Animal Sacrifice
- Canibalism
- Torture
- Cruelty
- Bigotry and Racism
- Intolerance
- Self Righteousness
- Slavery
- Starting Wars
- Sex with Children
- Religious Genital Mutilation
- Religious Deception
- Deceitfulness
- Dishonesty
- Cheating
- Greed
- Selfishness
- Drug Addiction
- Blind Faith
- Abduction
- Terrorism
- Polluting the Environment
- Driving Slow in the Fast Lanes
Obviously not all these "sins" are equal. Smoking cigarettes isn't as bad as human sacrifice but you still don't want to start smoking and you want to quit if you can. The issues surrounding right and wrong are important and that's why we ask the Sacred Moral Question so that we can be as sure as possible that we are doing the right things.
